Since the birth of my son, I decided I am going to make an effort to help save the earth. I know it sounds corny to use that catch phrase, but it is what I’m doing, I am saving the earth. Now that I am a mother I realize that this earth is not just here for me, it needs to be around for my son and his children, and their children. I have given myself a real reality check, and I can no longer live selfishly. Many people argue that “one person cannot save the earth” but I believe they can. Just as each vote counts in an election and each person who joins in on a protest makes the statements more audible, each person who acts responsibly towards the environment is saving the world.

One of the ways that I am becoming more “green” is by using cloth diapers. We used disposables at first, but after a few months of watching the trash pile up by the hour I needed to put a stop to it. Not only were we creating a ton of garbage, but also it was garbage that will still be around in landfills ten generations from now! That is not okay. I invested in some cloth diapers. I would be saving a ton of money too if I weren’t so into choosing adorable prints and colors for my little boy. The important thing is I’m saving the earth. We do not use any disposable diapers or wipes.

Using cloth diapers is clearly an environmentally friendly thing to do. However, we are using a lot of water and electricity when we wash them every third day. Some of the modern cloth diapers take up to three hours in the dryer to get completely dry! I have visited many websites that break down the numbers and show that even with the excessive washing and drying, it is still much better for the environment to cloth diaper as opposed to using disposables. I would like to take it to the next step, though. When I can, I dry the diapers on our clothesline. This makes me feel much better since I am not using the dryer, but they still need a few minutes in the dryer otherwise they are stiff and crunchy. I am also still using electricity and water in the washer. A really dirty load needs to be run through three washer cycles.

So I came up with a way to make this better. I want to invest in solar energy panels. This way I will not be using the limited supply of natural gas which pollutes the environment and contributes to our economic instability. I still need to come up with a solution to save water. I’m thinking about saving my son’s bath water (which doesn’t really get dirty at all) and using that to fill the washer for the first run.

I can’t wait to get our solar panels installed. Yes, it is an investment but it’s an investment in the future. Plus, I can spend the money we save on electricity to buy new cute diapers for my baby!
