Having a pair of shoes that you like is a wonderful thing. The comfortable pair keeps your feet happy as you walk through whatever it is you do from day to day. You remember how they were when you first got them, and how gradually, over time, they broke in to feel better and better, until one day you did not even notice that you had anything on your feet. Unfortunately, walking creates wear and tear that even the best pair of shoes cannot stand up to. The soles wear out, the bottom cracks and loses traction, the leather cracks and bends, and the shoe becomes a problem to wear. You are now faced with a choice: Should you buy new shoes, or should you get these fixed?

An advantage to having your shoes fixed is that you do not have to go through the process of breaking a new pair in all over again. There is no guarantee that a new pair will even get to the point of comfort that this pair did. You might go through the whole procedure, dealing with the blisters and uncomfortable feet only to find that the shoes still are not as comfortable and desirable as the pair that you threw away. Some people have no problem taking such risks, but some of us like the comfort of an old shoe and will do what we have to do to keep that comfort around.

Another advantage to having your shoes fixed is the trouble it saves. If you have a pair of shoes that you like, you will naturally go shopping for a similar pair. If you are like most adults, your shoes have lasted a couple of years, and the ones you want are no longer available. Then you will have to go find something else you think you will like, and risk wearing them for a while and being dissatisfied. If you do not like them, yes, you will have to go out and shop all over again. That does not bother some people, but others find it immensely annoying.

Getting your shoes fixed is good for the environment. That means one more pair of shoes did not have to be made. It also means that one more pair of shoes will not be thrown into a landfill. It does not sound like much, but with billions of people in the world, many of them wearing shoes, and the vast overwhelming majority having two feet, that adds up to a lot of shoes. Not all shoes are repairable, but if they are, it is always good to save the ones you have instead of throwing them away and buying a new pair.

Finally, getting your shoes fixed is usually a sound financial investment. New shoes, especially good shoes, cost a lot of money. You can get a pair of shoes resoled and reconditioned for often half the price or less of a new pair of shoes. A penny saved is a penny earned, and fixing your shoes saves you a lot of pennies.

When your shoes wear out, you are better off trying to have them fixed. It’s good for your feet, good for the environment, and good for your wallet.
