Criminals who have not yet reached adulthood are termed juvenile delinquents. This category of criminals has separate set of laws governing them in most countries. The simple reason is that their acts are not always very grave, and even if they commit some grievous crime, it is merely out of immaturity or caused by some other reasons, which influence them to go to such extent.

Reasons like psychological or behavioral disorders can most often cause the youth to become hard core criminals. These factors can cause impulsiveness, aggression, and restlessness, which eventually cause them to get involved in some serious crime.

Lack of funds is another reason to cause juvenile delinquents. Researchers have found that those who are less intelligent and do not fare well academically are more prone to criminal offences. The reason could be that they know that without education they do not hold any chance of getting a high paying job and eventually will lack a comfortable and relaxed life. In such situations, these children get involved with all the wrong people and end up committing all sorts of crime.

Whatever is the offence or the reason for the offence, the entire responsibility of the juvenile delinquent goes to the family. The family is the place where a person is born and brought up, and if this place is faulty then it is quite obvious for a kid to become a delinquent.

In today’s fast paced world, both parents need to go out to work in order to maintain the family. In this kind of an arrangement, the children are left to the supervision of others, like baby-sitters or governess. Hence, the personal supervision of the parents is lacking, which plays a major role in the upbringing of a child. In these situations, the child is left alone to make decisions, which are most often wrong.

There are yet another group of parents who are very lenient and do not discipline the children as required. This leads to children going out and getting friendly with the wrong kind of people. This slowly leads to getting involved in addictions like smoking, drinking, drugs etc, and ultimately into some criminal offence. This can go to such an extent where these juvenile delinquents may be detained and tried and interrogated like an adult for very serious cases, like murder.

In families where one or more members are involved in criminal activities, it becomes a very easy choice for the youth of the family to get involved too. The surveillance of the parents and the relationship between a child and the parents play a very important role in the development of the child. This can at most times prevent juvenile delinquents.

Most states arrange for special detention centers for these juvenile delinquents. The trials and sentences are also different than adults. This is just because the mind of the youth is not developed like an adult and his complete life cannot be ruined because of a mistake committed due to immaturity.
